European Retina Meeting 2009

Meeting venue:

The meeting will take place in the Peter Friedrich Ludwig Hospital in Oldenburg.

The Peter Friedrich Ludwig Hospital is an arts center located in the very heart of Oldenburg, a medium-sized city in the very north of Germany. A range of museums, restaurants, bars and shops are just a few steps away. The closest international Airport is located 50 km away in Bremen.

Traveling to Oldenburg:

Oldenburg is a city in Lower Saxony, Germany, situated in northwestern Germany about 60 kilometers west from Bremen. Oldenburg is an independent city with a large university and approx. 160,000 inhabitants. IMPORTANT: While checking your travel options, please make sure you always refer to Oldenburg (Oldenburg) and not to Oldenburg (Holstein), otherwise you’ll end up somewhere else!

Airport Information

Bremen Airport (BRE) is the international airport closest to Oldenburg. It provides direct connections to numerous European cities and intercontinental connections via Munich, Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam or London.

You may also fly into Frankfurt am Main Airport (FRA) or Amsterdam Schiphol Airport(AMS), Netherlands, as alternative international airports, and then either rent a car or take a train to Oldenburg (for details see below).

Getting from Bremen Airport to Oldenburg

There are three options to reach Oldenburg from Bremen Airport:

By train:
The main railway station of Bremen can be reached by taxi or by tram line no. 6, which stops right outside the departure hall of the airport. At peak times, the tram runs every 10 minutes. The ride to the main railway station takes about 17 minutes.
At normal hours, there usually are two trains from Bremen to Oldenburg per hour. If you arrive late in the evening or very early in the morning please check departure times online (see link above). Local trains take about 30-45 minutes to reach Oldenburg; InterCity trains take about 27 minutes but are more expensive.
By shuttle taxi:
From Oldenburg and the surrounding region there is a bus shuttle service from and to Bremen Airport. Note that you are required to book this shuttle service in advance. You can either book online or by phone (+49 (0) 441 81114).
Rent a car:
Driving directions from Bremen:
1. Head towards the main road (=”Bundesstrasse”) B75 and follow the signs to Oldenburg via the highway (=”Autobahn”) A28.
2. The ride usually takes about 30-40 minutes but can be significantly longer during rush hour.

Getting from Frankfurt am Main Airport to Oldenburg

For information on getting to and from Frankfurt Airport, please follow this link. There are two options to get from Frankfurt Airport to Oldenburg:

By train:
There is usually one train from Frankfurt Airport to Oldenburg per hour. You will need to change trains in Cologne and Bremen or Hannover and Bremen. The ride takes approximately 5 hours.

All major car rental companies are represented at Frankfurt Airport.
Driving directions from Frankfurt Airport:
1. Head towards the highway A5 (direction Hannover).
2. Exit A5 at the intersection “Gambacher Kreuz” and enter the highway A45 (direction Cologne = “Köln”).
3. Exit A45 at intersection “Westhofener Kreuz” and enter to the highway A1 (direction Bremen).
4. Exit A1 at the intersection “Ahlhorner Dreieck” and enter A28 (direction Oldenburg)
5. Follow the signs to Oldenburg.
The ride takes about 4-5 hours. Note that at rush hour when traffic can be very heavy the trip may take substantially longer.

Getting from Amsterdam Schiphol to Oldenburg

For information on getting to and from Schiphol Airport, please follow this link. There are two options to get from Schiphol Airport to Oldenburg:

By train:
Usually there is a train from Schiphol Airport to Oldenburg every two hours; note that you will have to change trains in Groningen and Leer. The ride takes about 5 hours. See also this link.
All major car rental companies are represented at Schiphol Airport.
Driving directions from Schiphol Airport:
1. Head towards highway A4 (direction Amsterdam/Haarlem)
2. Exit A4 at the intersection with highway A10 and head into the direction Amersfoort/Utrecht/Den Haag.
3. Exit A10 and enter A1 (direction Almere/Amersfoort).
4. Enter A6 (direction Groningen), then change to A7(=E22, still direction Groningen).
5. In Groningen, enter A280 (direction Oldenburg).
6. Follow the signs to Oldenburg, exit A280 at the intersection “Bunde” and enter A31 (direction Oldenburg)
7. Enter A28 (direction Oldenburg).

Visa:

We advise all participants to check the visa agreement of Germany with the respective country of origin. Participants may wish to contact the German embassy in their respective countries.

Accommodation:

Several reasonably priced hotels are in walking distance and can be booked via the Tourist Office in Oldenburg. Please send the hotel reservation form (English version, German version) by email to info@oldenburg-tourist.de or by fax to +49 (0) 441 36161350.

The Oldenburg Youth Hostel is also in walking distance (< 2 km). Please note that the price for the obligatory Youth Hostel membership needs to be added to the room prices.
